Before going to the Art Institutes, do your home work first. There are many people that are not satisfied with AI or EDMC ran schools.

Those are kind of all the same thing? Art institute/art school/art college are basically just terms to describe schools that are dedicated specifically to teaching art.

If you go to art school then the classes you take will mainly only be art, there are some academic classes but honestly except for art history related stuff and some philosophy type classes they tend to be pretty bad. Everyone at the school will be an artist which is both good and bad I guess:)

You can also go to a regular college/university like University of Kansas or Notre Dame or UCLA or wherever and be an art major. They will have an art department, you'd take more academic classes and see/hang out with wider variety of students/majors, etc.

Like other answers said there is a chain of schools called 'Art Institute' schools that SUCK. They are all owned by the same for profit company. There are other (private, good) art schools though that also use Art Institute in their names like Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Art Institute, etc so it can be a little confusing.

The Art Institutes are a chain of schools that are owned by the same company, vs. smaller art schools. Both have good and bad points that you'd have to take into consideration on a school by school difference. The main positive of going to an art institute is that the classes are excellerated, and you're less likely to take a ton of general education classes.

Institute is just a fancy name for art school. There are many art schools across the country. The Chicago Art Institute IS a museum, but it is also a school. There is also the Kansas City Art Institute. The difference between art schools and 4 yr colleges and universities is that in art school you only take art classes towards your art degree. At a college or university, you are required to take general education classes ie, math, science, english, as well as art classes that you are majoring in.

The difference between a university and college, is that a college offers a 4 year degree. A university offers Masters (6 year) and Doctorate (8 year) degrees. The only Art Institute I am familiar with is the Art Institute of Chicago, and it is a museum. I would stick with a college or university in my search for education.
